- Chiang Mai to Sri Lanna National Park Wed, 10 Mar 2010 08:39:33 PST
- 59.19 kilometers / 03:30:46 riding time (Written by Adrian) So, after way too many days of sitting around in Chiang Mai, it was time to leave. We had agreed to meet Ian at 8 AM for breakfast at the Blue Diamond. As per usual, we were late showing up at 8.30 AM. The whole crew was already there - Ian ready to ride and Frank and Michael had shown up to wave us goodbye. [more]
- Chiang Mai Wed, 10 Mar 2010 08:28:14 PST
- (Written by Adrian) Ah, Chiang Mai - Bangkok of the North. What can I say? We spent way too much time there - almost three weeks. The city came highly recommended by locals, expats and travelers alike: "best city in Thailand," "loved my stay there and want to go back," "more relaxed than Bangkok with the same possibilities," etc. What haven't we heard about it? To state it right away: I'm not a fan. [more]
- Lamphun to Chiang Mai Wed, 10 Mar 2010 08:01:04 PST
- 33 kilometers / 01:30:00 riding time So, being only 33km, this day's ride, let's hope the length of the entry represents this very short distance...this time. Chiang Mai is going to be a long stay for us. We'll most likely get itchy feet, before our time is done there. But that's not to say, we won't get fat and happy, too. Our big plan for battle this, was to stretch out the distance from Hot to Chiang Mai via a circuitous route through those crazy climbs up to Mae Chaem and Doi Inthanon . [more]
- Chom Thom to Lamphun: 7'000 kilometers! Wed, 10 Mar 2010 07:34:46 PST
- 51.36 kilometers / 02:49:31 riding time Warning: for a short ride this is a long rant. So grab yourself a nice glass of wine or a cold can/bottle of suds and a comfy seat. We're on our own again. We're gonna miss that little guy, Vincent. The absolute suffering we shared on the hills, the honest conversation, the prohibited camping in the non-specified bird sanctuary and the cute and cozy. [more]
- Doi Inthanon NP to Chom Thom Thu, 4 Mar 2010 04:01:55 PST
- 36.61 kilometers / 01:45:01 riding time (Written by Adrian) Short day, short journal. As it was only 2nd February and we didn't want to arrive in Chiang Mai before the 6th, we decided to make it a few short rides to Chiang Mai, rather than one big one. The reasoning behind this was, that we would be sitting on our asses getting fat anyway while my family was going to visit us in the city. [more]
- Doi Inthanon NP to Summit Thu, 4 Mar 2010 03:54:48 PST
- 37.74 kilometers / 03:17:16 riding time (Written by Adrian) This was it: we were to assault Thailand's highest mountain on bicycle. Unloaded, that is. The plan was to rise around 7 AM, move our tents from the 'for bird' zone, eat breakfast and then start the ascent. If you have been reading this journal for a while now, you know exactly what happened. [more]
- Mae Cham to Doi Inthanon NP Thu, 4 Mar 2010 03:42:25 PST
- 29 kilometers / 03:27:15 riding time (Written by Adrian) Only 29 kilometers? Piece of cake, right? A walk in the park, right? Wrong. Not if you are intending to ride the first stage up the highest mountain in Thailand: Doi Inthanon, standing at 2'656 meters. For once, we managed to get out fairly early - around 7.30 AM, that is. We knew it was going to be 21 kilometers of straight climbing - from around 400 meters up to around 1'600 meters at the ranger station, then a downhill to. [more]
- Hot to Mae Chaem Thu, 4 Mar 2010 03:19:04 PST
- 69.84 kilometers / 05:39:24 riding time I have no notes for this leg. This is because today was a day of absolute suffering. Rest periods where just that, reserving all energy and mental capacity for battling the mountain. No matter, it was a river-run of approximately 23km west on R108 to northwest on R1086. For the rest, I will rely on memory, which is to say, this may end up being a whinging session borne of recalled agony. [more]
- Li to Hot Tue, 2 Mar 2010 19:29:33 PST
- 88.57 kilometers / 05:16:59 riding time (Written by Adrian) Erika! has already mentioned her favorite rides in Southern and Central Thailand (http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/page/?page_id=139589) - now this one from Li to Hot was my favorite ride up to this point. At least the morning was. Thanks to our MapMagic map, we were able to plot a route which let us avoid Highway 106 altogether. [more]
- Thoen to Li Tue, 2 Mar 2010 18:54:54 PST
- 51.08 kilometers / 03:30:14 riding time (Written by Adrian) Today was going to be our first mountain stage: from the low-land town of Thoen to the hill town of Li. We did feel good and ready for it, but you never know before climbing mountains. Another positive aspect was that we wouldn't have to ride it alone: Nic and Kate, whom we had met the day before were going into the same direction and we decided to join forces. [more]
