72.03 kilometers / 4:22:19 riding time Well, what'd'ya know, a quasi early start! A 7:45am departure. And this was definitely by some miracle. A group of 6 Scandinavian backpackers came in yesterday afternoon. Their 3 rooms were in separate parts of the guesthouse complex. One of theirs being next to ours. Let's start at the first faux pas. It doesn't take much to learn the basic customs in any country. [more]

44.62 kilometers / 2:25:18 riding time (Written by Adrian) Today was going to be a short day: around 30 kilometers; flat to Chiang Saen, where we would see the Mekong River for the first time. So what do we do when we know it is a short ride? That's right; we drag our feet in the morning. The Hannuer Resort was a nice enough place to do this anyhow, so we set the alarm clock to 7 AM, leisured ourselves out of bed and through a breakfast of muesli, yoghurt, self-made sandwich . [more]

88.58 kilometers / 5:23:12 riding time (Written by Adrian) Finally, after 11 days of trying to get better and after some good old western medicine, I felt confident enough about riding with my injured neck/shoulder. I could still feel the strained muscle/tendon, but by then, I had 90% of pain-free head rotation. Good enough for me to leave Fang. Just to make sure, I carried the pain killers and the muscle relaxant pills, the doc at Fang Hospital had given me, in my handlebar bag. [more]

68.74 kilometers / 4:33:59 riding time I cheated. For the first time in a long time, we had an early start. We were leaving the national park cottages by 7:11am. Trying, albeit unsuccessfully to make little noise while packing up the rest of the gear that was left out for morning use. We left Ian to sleep in. He's much faster than we and we know today is going to be murderous. [more]

73 kilometers / 04:46:00 riding time (Written by Adrian) We told the owner of our floating house, that we would want to leave at 9 AM in order for him to make sure our boat would be ready then. I got up around 7 AM to take some shots of the sunrise only to find Ian's door open. Where did he go? Then I saw his head bobbing in the lake, some 40 meters from the row of floating houses. [more]

59.19 kilometers / 03:30:46 riding time (Written by Adrian) So, after way too many days of sitting around in Chiang Mai, it was time to leave. We had agreed to meet Ian at 8 AM for breakfast at the Blue Diamond. As per usual, we were late showing up at 8.30 AM. The whole crew was already there - Ian ready to ride and Frank and Michael had shown up to wave us goodbye. [more]

(Written by Adrian) Ah, Chiang Mai - Bangkok of the North. What can I say? We spent way too much time there - almost three weeks. The city came highly recommended by locals, expats and travelers alike: "best city in Thailand," "loved my stay there and want to go back," "more relaxed than Bangkok with the same possibilities," etc. What haven't we heard about it? To state it right away: I'm not a fan. [more]

33 kilometers / 01:30:00 riding time So, being only 33km, this day's ride, let's hope the length of the entry represents this very short distance...this time. Chiang Mai is going to be a long stay for us. We'll most likely get itchy feet, before our time is done there. But that's not to say, we won't get fat and happy, too. Our big plan for battle this, was to stretch out the distance from Hot to Chiang Mai via a circuitous route through those crazy climbs up to Mae Chaem and Doi Inthanon . [more]
